Mike : These recordings are raw and
unmixed. I will replace those with the mixed ones once they are
finished. There is nothing really wrong with these but a little spit and
polish....maybe a little verb er somethin.....Kevin did a really great job
as always.
Shakedown –
Geez, starts a little rough, not rough but loose I guess is the word.
Adam’s first song to sing so he is getting his footing and really is singing
nice by the 2nd verse. What we call the “C Jam” where we vamp
over the chorus is the first of these stratospheric moments I wrote about
before in the other band blog. Absolutely insane to a point where we come
back to earth all smooth like. 4 people singing is Pisser.
Scarlet –
Goes great until I fuck the lyrics up. Mumble mumble…..that's the loneliest
time as a singer. Especially when you can’t even make sounds that could be
mistaken for the right words. There were songs in Borrowed Time I did,
before the Internet and lyric sites, where I would mumble whole verses I
couldn’t figure out. The coolest thing is now that we record 8
tracks and separate things I can go back and try to fix that vocal ala
Europe 72. (Yes E72 is overdubbed. Most of the vocals and all of Merl
Saunders B3 organ. Yes that's Merle believe it or not.) Why the heck not try
it, we have the technology.........we can rebuild it.
Nice lead Adam. Fluid.
The intro to the Fire jam is incredible. Every texture you can imagine.
Weird Manzarek keyboards from Katie, Pete and Jason are dropping bombs, Pino
is just running and running with the bass all while Adam just flails over it
and I can’t even tell what I was doing half the time. That is mind
blowing.
Then BAM, we hit …
Fire -
drastically but really nicely……………
Solid Fire. Not always one of my favorite songs to do but I had a good
feeling about this one and it’s every bit as good as I thought. Adam gets
an A+ for shred factor and nailing the Jerry riffs. After we end Pino says
over the mic
“If someone doesn’t have sex with Adam tonight I may have too, that
was fuckin awesome!!!!”
Yikes. haha.
Aiko -
Solid
Aiko, it’s a wonder why we don’t do this more often. Nice vocals at the end.
Eyes of the world –
Pino
starts it off on the bass sweetly. Very nice. Great jams, great leads by
both Adam and Katie. This is a real good Eyes….needs a better mix tho……
Into a weird spacey jam………drums a little…..then
The Other One -
pino absolutely wails in the first jam. Him and Adam are just battling back
and forth. This is one of those times I spoke of….we just bounced off the
freakin moon.
Not fade Away –
Starts nice. Kev captured this nice and these are only rough mixes. Crazy
jam in NFA. Pino pushes it around while I am changing amps. I forgot I blew
my amp.
Update : Therefore there is very little me on
the rest of these recordings, as I changed amps and not the mic with the
amp. Suck. Luckily we had brought it an extra…Pushed into a jam that’s
sounds like The Jefferson Airplanes “Revolution”. Yes, there goes
Saturn………and it’s totally “Revolution”.
GDTRFB -
is
real nice. 3 part harmonies going. There goes Pluto. Un-frickin real. Pino
and Adam going at it sonically……down…to just 4 part harmonies….Fuckin
revival meeting singing!!!! We skip the bid you goodnight outro and go Right
into……………………..
Good Lovin –
Hot early Dead GL beginning. Everybody singing………….
Early C jam that starts slow and builds into an absolute
monster….started by Pino of course……
Pino does his Pino rap, about playing beer pong. I will say I am ear to ear
smiling as I listen,…..but Pino has done better maybe I think…it’s funny and
I love Pino when Pino does his Pino’ism’s. But Beer Pong? I don’t know
…..jam….here we go again……..”took another shot on the table, then I new I
was able….”. hahaha , that’s great….. ”Has the beer pong
disease……went to the DR…” Holy shit…he got back to the songs subject and
segued into the “Jump on the Pony and Ride” Pigpen rap. Brilliant. Wicked
jam on the way out of it too……oh wait…..rapping again about his Dr. and
being old……then he gets sentimental……."would be home wearing pink
slippers and watching Lifetime" (Double yikes). “There is no other
place I would rather be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
I stand corrected. Classic Pino.
Great singing on the way out.
Encore : Casey Jones – Solid Casey. Adam takes his second lead voc and does
a nice job with it. Great backing vocs too. Adam rips the lead……………………..

Mike : Another of my
“Wake up and find a nice soundboard Deadshow ” This show is well played,
recording is A+, real nice show for your listening pleasure. I've been
diggin late 70's shows recently, this one is a keeper.
Nice Jack Straw leads it off.
Only problem is Jerrys vocs are a not in the mix. He tears it up tho
in the lead.
Dire Wolf comes next, once again
sans Jerry’s vocals which is a bummer. Needless to say this almost derailed
this blog entry. But thankfully for you and me it didn’t cuz this is a hot
show.
BIODTL is nice, nothing
spectaclular.
Then one of my favorites Peggy-O
, especially when it’s sung with SOUL like Jerry does on this one (I knew a guy who sang this song
very plain, used to make me wanna gouge my ears out!) This
one here is a beauty. Gorgeous, sweet and worth a listen.
Mama Tried shit kicks all the way
through. Great version. Jerry rips it up right on into………….
Mexicali….boogie boogie. Great version.
A little finniculi Finniculi is
next.
Then Bobs gives the house people
shit about turning off the lights in the venue. Phil also says something
about them, calls em “dummy”.
Row Jimmy is next. Lush lead and
backing vocs. Sweet version, even Donna sounds nice.
Minglewood has a great drum sound
and Jerry RIPS it. Bob growls his way thru…..
A bouncy Loser is next…shit…… I’m
gonna show this to the boys, no need to play this song as a dirge…….not that
there was any reason but…..Jerry’s vocs are really nice. May be the best
Loser lead I have ever heard. If you love this song like I do then listen to
this version……
Lazy Lightning RIPS. Fans of the
drummers will like this show and tune, crisp cans.
Jerry’s guit work during the “My Lightning Too!” part is smokin’!
Bertha Kicks off set 2 and
allegedly Jerry Windmills ala Pete Townsend. Once again the drums are
rocking. Jerry is a little nasally (right after set break? No Waaaaay!)
singing, but the lead is fluid and soars.
Good lovin has some late 60’s
early 70’s Pigga feel at the beginning. Once again. DRUMS, loud clear and
booming. Rockin’ lead, you can hear the crowds approval.
A+ Good Lovin.
Must have been The Roses is sweet
as usual. Phil plays beautiful. In fact he has this whole show. Bright
clear notes.
Eerie Estimated Prophet. Very
Nice. “This Afternoon the streets Turn Grey…..blah blah…” is a lyric I’ve
never heard in this song,. cool
Into an Eyes that is fantastic…...
Great Drumz.
Here is a picture i found of Jerry playing Drumz with the boys this night.
Groovy Truckin.
Sweet sweet Wharf Rat. Nice vocs Jer.
Around and Around with a weird Johnny B Goode jam that WAILS. Then
a US Blues rounds it out. Great show.

Mike :
This is a show I came
across surfing archive.org. The quality is crystal clear. A
killer late 80's show. This is one to crank up and groove.
A nice Box kicks it off . A
bombastic Hell in a Bucket follows. Solid grooving Touch precedes a nice
Rooster. One of my faves Far From ME follows and its a real good
one. The whole rest of the set does not disappoint. From Cumberland -
Memphis Blues rocks - Push Comes to Shove to Cassidy. solid 1st
setlist.
2nd set highlights include
one of the better Louie Louie's that they did back then. Brent screaches
and moans and rocks. Crazy >> Samson does not disappoint nor does an
upbeat Eyes of the World. It grooves like crazy, noodles like a
serpent slithering up your spine. Good stuff.
Freaky industrial
Drumz.
Throwing Stones makes you want to jump out of your seat and follow
reverend Bob untooooo the promised land.
Other One is
delicious...................
Wharf Rat is it's usually

- Little
Feat, Ebbets Field, Denver Colorado
Mike :
Pete and I saw a band called The Bridge opening up for DSO at
Lupo's. The guy from The Bridge reminded me so much of Lowell George of
Little Feat that I ended up searchin Archive for stuff. There is tons of it.
Little Feat and Lowell have allot in common with The Dead. Most being Lowell
produced the album "Shakedown St" right before his untimely death in 1979 at
age 34.
CLICK
HERE for his Wiki entry. Also the reunited Feat opened for the
Dead a few times way back when in the early 90's I think.
This show is evidently ripped from an unavailable live album. Doesn't
matter, it roars! Lowell is a sick slide player. Bill Payne an even sicker
keyboardist. One of the hottest bands ever and I am amazed when all
people know is "Dixie Chicken". Lowell was a pure musical genius.
Things I learned about Lowell :
He played slide with a Sears & Roebuck 11/16ths spark-plug socket
He once fronted, for a brief period, The Standells of "Dirty Water" fame.
My favorites are Apolitical Blues, Two Trains. Sailing Shoes, Tripe Faced
Boogie, Fat Man, Walkin all Night , On Your Way Down and Willin'.
This a klller show, great
sound, great band. Enjoy it.

- The Other Ones,
Further Festival -
Great Woods, Mansfield MA
Of all the shows that I've been too (not many compared to
most folks), I still consider this to be one of my favorites... This tour
was special in that is was the reuniting of Bobby, Mickey, Phil and Bruce.
Some folks in the BRW circle have heard the story about the evnts that led
up to this show. The tickets for this went on sale on 5/2/98 at 12:30PM, how
do I remember this so well... I was standing at the altar, waiting for my
bride-to-be... with cell phone in hand, trying to get thru to ticketmaster
to get tickets to this show.
Needless to say, I got my miracles... Both in my lovely wife and tickets to
this show.
Highlights of this show were Loose Lucy , Estimated and Sugar Mag... Bobby
is absolutely on fire during Estimated during the bridge... as well as the
Sunshine Daydream, reprise. But what stood out the most for me was that this
show was the show that FINALLY opened my eyes to a Mr Steve Kimock. I had
heard about him before and didn't really give anything that was said much
thought, then I heard the Hornsby song "White Wheeled Limosine"... Kimocks
solo at the end of it was probably some of the best guitar work I had ever
heard post-Jerry.

Professor Pino Picks ..

Pino
:
Whole show is amazing. A garage version of Live Dead.
Highlights:
Dark Star - Jerry at his best - playing cool phrases, repeating them -
moving on to somehting else.....you can actually sing along to his playing
after a few listens
Other One>New Potato - rockin is an understatement - they must have
been drenched when they finished - Phil leads the way.
Other notes from Mike :
Bobby says: "Ok, we're gonna do a,
we're gonna do a elementary dance number now. It's a foxtrot and it's also a
ladies' choice" before Dark Star.
weird and loud percussion in DS jam.
Bob also says "Funniest thing I ever heard" during the silence right after
"one man gathers what another man spills" .

AUDIO :
There are no Soundboards

Do you have em?
Email us if ya do.
Jason
: My first show
so probably a little biased. When you first look at the setlist it
looks like your standard '80's run of the mill Dead show, but
their playing that night was phenomenal. (The night before, 4/2/87 was
also a hell of a show.) Remember, this was the spring tour where
Jerry made his comeback after being in a coma, and the crowd was
absolutely on fire. They opened with a rippin Hell in a Bucket -->
a very nice Sugaree and then, even though C.C. Rider could be a
drag sometimes, even this one was unbelievable.
It Musta Been the Roses was really nice, Big Railroad Blues, Let it
Grow, and Don't Ease closed the set.
The second set is where the shit really hits the fan. China Cat was
unbelievable, Jerry was so on in his leads and gave it everything he
had. I Know You Rider, the crowd was so into it...I thought the
roof was going to blow off the place when he shouted the
"northbound train" line. Then a perfect Women are Smarter -- >
Crazyfingers ( a nice treat). The way they weaved their way into
Samson from Crazyfingers.....an unbelievable jam. Other One, Wharf
Rat, Throwing Stones, Not Fade Away...all stellar performances.
The crowd was ecstatic, then they finished with U.S. Blues...and
Jerry says "Give me five, I'm still alive!" and we all danced out
of the place. While Jerry may have lost some skills after his coma, the
Centrum show crowd coaxed out one of his finest late eighties
performances.

Jackie Greene - So Hard To
Find My Way
Mike
:
UPDATE:
that video got pulled. Here
is a different one, same tune. If you get motion sickness WATCH OUT!
Jackie has been on tour with
Phil and Friends this fall. When me and the boys saw them at the Boston
Orpheum they did this tune. Catchy
pop number, right up my alley. We are actually going to play it at Our Place
on the 24th. Very talented dude Jackie is. He plays guitar as well if
not better than the piano and a really good voice to boot. Found
this version on You Tube. He was supposed to be back on Conan last
week as Phil and Friends were doing a 10 night run in NYC at the Nokia
Theatre. but due to the writers strike he didn't play.
He walks around
with his hands in his pockets
got a picture of his baby on a chain in a locket
he needs her love so bad, but shell never know
cause he wont ever tell her
and its so hard to find my way
Poor Richards got himself a banjo
hes missing four strings but he aint even bothered
he says: sunshine gonna come my way, look out
kid this might be my lucky day
and its so hard to find my way
red robins been a-workin in the kitchen
got everything she needs, but everythings a-missing
she grew up with the radio, tattoo on
her hip is to remind her so....
that its so hard to find my way
I know a man whos been working for the city
he pays his rent but his life is just a pitty
he says: nothings gonna change around here,
im the same old man Ive been for nearly 20 years
its so hard to find my way
She turns heads wherever shes a-walking
she never speaks she lets her body do the talkin
shes daddys little baby girl
but she aint living in daddys world

- Grateful Dead
Silver Stadium
Rochester NY
Mike : The second best show I ever
saw.
Could tell stories for days on this one.....
We had just seen Saratoga before and were headed to Oxford Maine
after.
Four of us were in my little Dodge Omni, me, Jason and our friends
Josh and Zat. Zat twisted his ankle bad in Saratoga, within 5 minutes
at Silver Stadium a guy came along with a crutch that he didn't
need anymore. As Zat got higher, his ankle got better, and
we crossed paths with a guy with a cane that needed a crutch, a trade was
made. Weird stuff like that happened the whole trip.
Silver stadium is a minor league ballpark. Very cool place to see a show.
This show was as close as I ever got. General admin and Jason and I snaked
down right under Phil, maybe 7 people back.
Needless to say the opener of Box of Rain was incredible, We could
have spit and hit the stage. And to have Phil singing right above us
is an image I can bring back to my mind to this day....
Set 1 highlights are Box, Ramble on Rose and of course Far From Me.
Set 2 highlights were :
The only Green Onions ever played. Ripping China Rider.
Samson wails! Brings me right back.
Believe it or not.....some people wouldn't like Believe it or Not....I
did.....passionate Jerry vocals...
This whole 2nd set is great, I may be biased, but thats ok! Gorgeous
Wharf Rat and Brokedown.
Man I love this show!
